Staying Healthy During the Holidays

As beautiful and meaningful as the holiday season is, it’s no secret that stress levels have a way of running high during these festive months. Many of us become so engrossed in planning family gatherings, shopping, and attending parties that we end up ignoring our own health and wellbeing.

This year, why not change things up and approach the holidays with an eye toward balance. After all, staying healthy during the holidays is just as important as the gift-giving and social events.

6 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

When we allow ourselves to get run down during the holidays, due to increased stress, lack of sleep, and veering from a healthy diet, we are much more prone to getting sick. And no one wants to be sick during the lovely holiday season!

There are several ways to stay fit and healthy at this time of year. Here’s how:

  1. Shop ahead for holiday gifts. Eliminate that dreaded sense of urgency and panic by starting your Christmas shopping early. Starting in late October-early November, make it a goal to purchase one or two gifts each week to take some of the pressure off.

  1. Leave room for down time. It is very common to over-schedule ourselves at this time of year because we don’t want to miss out on anything. Consider narrowing down your activities a bit to allow some down time for rest and relaxation.

  1. Get plenty of sleep. Sleep deprivation is very hard on both our physical and mental health. Stick to a daily sleep schedule, at least most of the time, to keep your strength up and your mood cheery.

  1. Get your flu shot. The last thing you want is to be laid up with the flu during the holidays, so don’t forget to schedule your flu shot.

  1. Make a schedule. Instead of flying blind as you tackle all your entertaining and shopping goals, why not create a schedule to help guide all these activities. If you’re planning a family gathering, jot down a to-do list, like a menu and various tasks, to keep you on track.

  1. Make time for self-care. As hectic as the holiday season can be, do take time out for yourself. Take daily walks to keep your stress levels down, and pamper yourself with a well-timed massage, facial, or a mani-pedi.

  1. Have an attitude of gratitude. More than anything else, approach the season with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude is not only good for the soul, but also good for overall health. In fact, a study reviewed the affect of a grateful attitude on physical and mental health wellness and found that stress hormones were 23% lower in those with a mindset of gratitude.

Navigating the holidays is indeed a balancing act – where you strike the perfect balance between giving to others and taking care of yourself. This year, find that balance and enjoy a happy and restful holiday season.
