A medical team in Korea became the first to transplant a 3D-printed windpipe into a patient in 2023. The recipient was a woman in her 50s who lost part of her windpipe after thyroid cancer surgery.

The artificial windpipe was specially designed for her using stem cells from other patients and materials like PCL plastic for support. It took under 2 weeks to print at T&R Biofab.

The goal is for the 3D-printed windpipe to help the patient's body regenerate her own windpipe in the next 5 years before the plastic support degrades.

"While it's too soon to say that 3D-bioprinting could be the solution for the current shortage of organs for transplantation, it definitely increases the hopes to partially solve the issue for some organs...," Dr Paulo Marinho, head of scientific strategy at T&R Biofab, commented.

When Sebastian and his partner arrived, they met the host and her cat. The cat then took them on a guided hike along the Appalachian Trail, as she does with all guests.
